Intradermal Allergy Testing

Intradermal testing is the gold standard in allergy testing for atopy (environmental allergies). A sedative is given to relax your pet, an area on the side is shaved, and multiple different allergens that are common to the Southeast are injected into the skin. The test site is then examined at 20 minutes and again at 2 hours to detect which allergens created a red, raised reaction.

This information is then used to create an allergy serum (often referred to as allergen specific immunotherapy or allergy vaccine) that is given as either injections or oral drops in order to desensitize your pet to their relevant allergens. We will also discuss avoidance strategies for the relevant allergens. Follow-up is important to monitor treatment success and make adjustments as necessary.
